Не получается воспользоваться VDPAU на моём гибридном ноуте (две карты: Intel и NVidia).
Пробовал воспользоваться страницей на Вики моего дистрибутива:

По этой доке смотрю, что выводит иксовый сервер:

Уже первое несоответствие: в лога есть va_gl, но такого нет среди динамических библиотек (.so), зато там есть trace!
Но, что интересно, утилита vdpauinfo распознаёт названия имеющихся библиотек в переменной VDPAU_DRIVER. Т.е., если запускать без изменение, по умолчанию используется va_gl:
$ vdpauinfo

А если задавать имеющиеся, то другая ошибка:

Поигрался с утилитой prime-run чтобы задействовать NVidia GPU. Если под ней запускать firefox, вот что выводит about:support:

И если запускать утилиту glxgears, то под prime-run есть разница в выводи утилиты nvidia-smi (там и потребление памяти, и потребление GPU):

Соответственно, GPU как таковой задействован. Но, может быть нужно ещё что-то настроить? Кто знает?
Возможно, откадка в выводе этих утилит?
